Mach4 is probably still a long way from being released to the world but I have now started to do some practical testing and this is just a short video of one of the test runs I was able to do today. http://www.graytel.talktalk.net/Mach4.wmv

Further testing with Mach4 has been put on hold for a while for the software team to resolve an issue I have discovered with it's handling of M codes. May be a quick fix, may take some while - I will just have to wait and see.
For those wishing to get a feel of Mach4 the download link for the demo version is here http://www.machsupport.com/software/mach4/

Hi John,
Nobody seems to know why but the motion is just so much smoother with Mach4 in fact the machine sounds entirely different than it does under Mach3. Art (the founder of Artsoft / Mach3) has now purchased a Synrad laser tube to fit on his machine so it looks like Mach4 will end up having good laser support (I hope).

Just for the fun of it I placed a second monitor in the shot and tagged the video of the second run onto the first video http://www.graytel.talktalk.net/Mach4B.wmv

Hi boys! When I turn on the PC and start Mach, there is a value in Z and X axis DRO. I have to manually zero them. Is there a setting somewhere to start up with zero values?

Config / General Config - Axis DRO properties - uncheck all but Copy G54...
Offsets screen - zero G54 offsets and then save Work Offsets.
That should do it

Just by way of an update...
The software development of Mach4 has not been as rapid as I had originally envisaged and there are still many issues (bugs perhaps) to be addressed before it is ready to take over from Mach3. Mid stream changes to the API were a setback to some developers of external motion controllers and in the case of the Warp9 Smooth Stepper interest seems to have been totally lost in any development of a USB version plugin software. Overall, very few (if any) semi-professional users of Mach3 have switched over to using Mach4 - there seems to be too many 'work-arounds' required to overcome what may be considered basic software problems. Shame really as it has been some 18 months since my original evaluations and it looks like there may still be a long wait (perhaps another couple of years) before I can be certain Mach4 is reliable enough for me to use it in a semi-production environment.

Well, the years keep passing and Mach4 is continuing to mature - still not quite ready for me to use in a production environment but it is getting close.
This took a long while comming but as from Build 200 the Warp9 ESS plugin now fully supports the M62/M63 laser switching commands.

Something that may be of interest to program developers looking to reproduce 8 bit images using a laser and Mach4.
Mach4 has the commands M62P# and M63P# (where the # denotes the Output# number) which both only operate, or take effect, consistent with an axis movement. So the Gcode… M62P1 would turn on Output #1 at the instant of an axis movement and M63P1 would turn off Output#1 again, at the instant of an axis movement.
As of Build 210 the Ethernet Smooth Stepper plugin allows for multiple instances of the M62/M63 commands to be stacked and operated jointly upon an axis (any axis) movement. So please consider the following snippet of Gcode… G21 F4500 M62P1 M62P2 M63P3 M62P4 M62P5 M62P6 M63P7 M62P8 G1 X0.001 % At the instant the X axis moves the Outputs# 1 to 8 would contain the binary data 1 1 0 1 1 1 0 1 (assuming you are reading the bits from the same direction as me). Obviously any combination could be set from 00000000 to 11111111.
The interesting part, and the point of all this, is that Outputs# 1 to 8 could be interrogated by a simple controller (to convert the bit pattern to an 8 bit decimal value from 0 to 255 or a PWM signal from 0% to 100% which could then be used to control / vary laser output power from within Gcode which is running at constant velocity.
It is basically a way to output 8 bit numbers (byte) from within a running Gcode and having no noticeable effect on Axis Velocity or breaking the constant velocity chain.
I have not fully tried this yet but it could offer a considerable reduction in the process time when laser engraving 8 bit images (currently using the S### command to control / vary laser output power).
