Hi Guys,

This is certainly a brilliant program, and for free !!

I tried the reverse routing option but got a few 'chatter' marks due to a lack of my spindle rigidity so next time I try this it will have to be double pass or else fit my, extremely noisy, Bosch spindle which takes no prisoners. biggrin

The result is second class but thought you may like to see it anyway.

Hi Guys,

As my F-Engrave GCode contains a number of 7mm deep straight plunges, this turned out to be an obstacle for my little engraving spindle and the work was spoiled as a result. The more I looked at it I decided to make another, this time using my Bosch router spindle and (as with many things) this turned out a lot better the second time around.

This one is the same size 280mm x 50mm but made from Oak, stained using Famatyi’s method and then satin varnished. I am very pleased with the result and this is now a work to be proud of (with the earlier example now consigned to the rubbish bin).

An interesting feature of F-Engrave is that the saved GCode contains a detailed header which allows the program to recreate it’s work file from reading it’s own GCode – the down side is that it does not like working in mm units but as it is a free program, I can live with that. The tool path geometry is faultless so every credit must go to Scott for writing such an excellent program.

Hi KisKZ, I am not good with artwork but I will give the new Logo some thought.

tweakie, nice logo, I like it!
Why do You say the program does not like to working in mm? Did You have any issue with metric work?
Although I did not try the program, I will.

Hi Amator,

As the program is of US origin (where they work in Inches) I suspect the author had not fully tested it using mm units. I found it worked extremely slowly and eventually crashed whilst calculating the tool path. When I used the default (Inch) settings it was fine so I just stuck with that rather than carrying out any more tests.

Whilst I have the Bosch spindle fitted to my machine I keep thinking "what else can I make" biggrin

I would be most interested to hear how you get on with this excellent little program.

Tweakie.

EDIT; The mm thing is my fault as I did not set the V-bit diameter correctly - works OK in mm units once I get the settings right happy

Hi tweakie, I just uploaded two videos to here (1 and 2) , I did not find difference between Imperial and Metric settings. Would You tell what was wrong?
Next time I'll try the code into material (now I'm fighting with a relief :))

Hi Amator,

It is a shame that F-Engrave does not save the last settings / setup (in a similar way to DotG) so it is very easy to miss something when it has to be set-up every time it is used.
I suppose that the answer for working with mm units is to modify the default initialisation 'py' file into metric and then save it back but I have not tried that yet (looks scary). smile

Hi tweakie, F-engrave can save the settings, my copy starts with Metric settings, all I had to do is to create the config file.
Form comcact.net:
"Configuration File
config.ngc When F-Engrave starts up the the directory in which F-Engrave starts in is searched for a file named "config.ngc". If the file is found it is read and all of the F-engrave options are set according to the settings saved in the config file.

To create a config file with your preferred options for startup just open F-Engrave and change the settings to your liking and save a file called "config.ngc" in the directory with F-Engrave. (If you are not using the precompiled windows executable you could also just edit the settings in the .py file)
"

I was trying this soft a bit more and I found that I'm unable to open .dxf file, it wants to come as font file. What do I do wrong?

Hi Amator,

I think there are a number of different formats for a .dxf file. Some work OK with F-Engrave Jaguar and some don't work at all. I am not sure why.

tweakie, hello!
I installed Inkscape, and the files saved from it can go into F-engrave. Although I use .dxf R13, (same as Inkscape) some file doesn't open in F-engrave. Jaguar appears fine.

Hi Amator,

I just tried 'Jaguar' and although it loads OK the tool-path produced is not very good - there are too many unnecessary Z moves. Perhaps I am missing something with the F-Engrave set-up (like I did with converting / saving the Inches to mm settings biggrin ).

Well, I finally got to VCarving this boat name into a piece of Teak.

Because the overall length is greater than my machine table it had to be completed in 3 stages but this is not as difficult to do as I had first thought, having practised on a piece of MDF.

Now the hard work begins - It has to be profile cut to a curved shape and the edges rebated, varnished and the lettering gold finished.

As Tweakie started this discussion with a number eight house number I thought I'd share a couple of pics of an 8" number 8 house sign I made recently.

Its made from oak and then sprayed with rustoleum's copper paint.
