Just trying out a different motion controller and software called Auggie http://gear2motion.com/auggie Although still very much in the development stage it is already capable of producing some excellent laser engraving work. It has been designed around the Pokeys 57CNC hardware, which is not cheap, but it is easy to use and as the software development progresses it can only get better.

Something else that may be of interest is that the motion controller uses true ‘S-curve’ Acceleration and Deceleration parameters. With a machine using stepper motors this generally allows a considerable increase in reliable feed-rate and of course, this leads to reduced process time.
And something I forgot to mention is that Auggie is totally free software (free to download and free to use).

I am just loving the ‘AUGS’ button and Auggie’s variable PWM laser power control together with the ‘S curve’ Accel / Decel and motion from the 57CNC. My machine is loving it as well – much quieter and smoother in operation which is certainly kind to all the mechanicals.

Thanks guys.
Currently the Auggie software will not allow the Pulse Repetition Frequency of the PWM to be set any lower than 1kHz. This is OK for Laser but not for Impact magnet operation where I need a PRF as low as 50Hz to 80Hz. I expect the software to be revised shortly then (hopefully) this should allow 1 bit images (which have not been dithered) to be reproduced with my Impact electro-magnet.

What do you think about this ? frequency can also be converted to voltage and voltage as a frequency of 2 harmonized solutions to your problem |

Hi Kaqkk,
Many thanks for the information.
I don't know if this makes sense but...
What I am doing is using the Frequency of the PWM signal to control the number of Impact Hits (linear density) and the Duty Cycle of the PWM signal to control the weight of those individual Impact Hits. I am basically trying to emulate the operation of the Roland Metaza.

Hi Kaqkk, It is difficult for me to explain. The Auggie software scans the image and produces a PWM proportional to each pixel value (with relation to the step resolution and feed-rate). With 1 bit images my electromagnet stays energised during the high pixel values because of the high (1kHz) PRF. Once the software has been adjusted to allow selection of 50Hz to 80Hz PRF then the electromagnet will oscillate and produce the effect I am after. My electromagnet is driven by the PWM signal gating a 48Volt DC source.
Hi Amator, That image was produced using my 40W CO2 laser. The actual image size is approx.100mm wide and the wood is birch (I think). The stepover is 0.2mm and the feed-rate 4200mm/min. Total time was about 18 minutes. The software... It is still under development, it uses an S-curve planner for the acceleration / deceleration, fires the laser using the PWM signal and only during G1,G2,G3 feed-rate moves. The laser will not fire during G0 rapid moves. It is currently over-complicated (it contains too many options) so it takes a bit of getting used to but it is relatively easy to get good results (much more easy than the old Mach3 plugin). The down-side is that it has been designed around the 57CNC motion controller which is quite expensive and this may put off many potential users. It also outputs an adjustable ‘tickle pulse’ (which is a requirement for RF excited CO2 lasers) but this is also useful with DC excited CO2 lasers when operating (engraving) at very low current settings. Early days yet and I have much to learn but I think Auggie is going to be good.
