There has recently been some renewed interest shown in Impact Engraving and perhaps using different techniques to those previously tried. So that any new information can be shared openly I have created this new topic and invite any that are interested and those who are not already members of this forum, to join with us and contribute to this joint project.

As a group we can succeed. ok

Hi Uncle Miki bá

One of the developments that has occurred is using a steppermotor instead of a solenoid. Initial thoughts were to energise one phase for the impact and use a spring for the return. From tests that I have carried out it seems that the return spring has the effect of adding to the mass of the moving parts thus slowing the acceleration on the impact stroke (pretty much the same as the electromagnet that I am currently using). A better solution may be to do away with the spring and energise the second phase of the stepper to cause it to return. This can be accomplished by a relatively simple ‘toggle’ circuit which energises one phase when it receives a trigger pulse and then energizes the other phase once the pulse has been removed.

There are other ideas which have been sent to me by private email and I am hopeful that these ideas will be made public and shared with the greater community by the originators joining this forum and posting their thoughts here.

Hi guys.I am Mihai and wanted to build the same thing as this topic subject.
Since all my readings , the best engraving on granite or stones that can be made , are with an voice coil motor as an actuator.
The voice coil its often use in old harddisks and have a verry fast movements.
Now i am searching for testing an solenoid or stepper motor impact engraver. I allready order a solenoid magnet and i will try to use conected to a stepper motor driver becouse its a more easy ideea to build. The other type of impacting, with a stepper motor is more precise but the electronic involved its unknown to me.
I think the PWM output on the cnc controller is the best way to use those impulse. Now i try to use PWM output from a GRBL controller board with a laser diode and the tests are verry ok.If its permited(if not a moderator can erase that)i give a link for an electronic board that have output for a voice coil motor.
I have the board purchesed but now i have to build the voice coil motor.
This is the link and Tweakie its right , as a grup its posible to share and grow that ideea.

Hi Mihai,

Welcome to the forum, I am very pleased to see you here. hello

When using the ‘HD Voice Coil’ system do you think it would be better to use a ‘motor driven, tilted, diamond coated, engraving burr’ or a ‘direct impact, single point, diamond tool’ ?? (not sure I have explained this very well).

Thanks
Yes that option its best ‘motor driven, tilted, diamond coated, engraving burr’ .Its the same as Gelek g10 machine.
The spindle or dc motor , drive a diamont coated mill and its inclined at lets say 45 degree and make rapid movements on engrave surface and that results to make litlle chips on that.
I have ideea to make voice coil motor but i am not sure if can be driven by pwm  , but its posible.

I think Amatőr has used a 'diamond coated engraving burr' for his mirror work.

These are my first thoughts on driving a stepper motor with a 'toggle' action (no return spring). Obviously calculating component values and refinements to the basic circuit need to be done but it is perhaps food for thought.

Next job is to take a hard drive apart and see what the 'voice coil' actuator looks like. smile

Also , is this setup , instead of stepper or voice coile , a simple dc motor.

tweakie, yes, I used a small phono point diamond dresser in a spindle, something like this:

prelucrarecnc, dc motor is a good idea, there are many little dental burrs on the Ebay can be used to engrave stone.
