I have a friend who owns a cabinet shop and get most of my wood thru him from suppliers.  My melamine comes from Georgia Hardwoods and cost is about $23 for a 5'x8' sheet.  Have not tried any from the big box stores as wood from suppliers tend to be better quality.  For the thinner materials (0.25") the melamine with the mdf core lays pretty flat.  Also have found that light sanding the surface seems to help even out the burn regardless of the wood type.

Did this one today of my lab, Smokey.  Birch, 0.006" res, 60 ipm, no correction in PEP on photo, 0.0230" max depth.  Size 9w x 6h.  Took couple of burns to get to this point.  First with sharp and gamma were too dark.

That is really nice Doug,

Looks like you getting in some burn/experimenting time.  biggrin

Had to replace my laser diode in the mini after 1300 hours of run time. It finally failed and I suspect it was that smoking hot mouse pad girl image I engraved not to long ago shortened the life of it considerably.   laugh

Replaced it with a M140 from DTR. Boy, I sure have some laser power now compared to before. Did this one Birch Ply at 65IPM, 80% of full power at Z-.0256 full depth, .006" PR , lightened the image up slightly with gamma, sharpened to 12 and used PicLaser Lite to generate the Gcode. Size was 7.2" X 9" and it took exactly 3 hours to engrave. I still have some more tuning to do, but getting pretty close.

Doug and Jeff,
My congratulations to you both.  Those engraving both need to be nailed to a wall somewhere on permanent display.  hands

Really well done, both of you.

Hi Jeff,
Looking good!  With 1300 hrs. you got great service out of your original diode.  Looking forward to your work with the M140 as that is same diode I have.  What value did you set your max amps?  Also what is your new measurement from material top to lens bottom?
Doug

Thanks Doug,

I thought you had the 9mm Nichia. If you only have the M140 and was pumping 2a to it before, I'm real surprised it survived. Anyway, I set the threshold to 150ma and max at 1.6a. My height for the lens to material is the same as before around 3 inches.

I'm starting to see the issues you had with speed and more LD power, but I'm working through them. This was the first one that was good enough to even post.   up

Opps, I stand corrected, I do have the 9mm Nichia.  Sorry about that, but was still interested in what you set as max power.  Also like the encoder 4th axis setup much better than the original Z-axis setup.  Recommend it for anyone with the encoder setup.  Really interested in your findings on the LD power/speed.

Doug,

I, myself, recommend using the encoder either way because I have had very good success with them both. By having the encoder setup on the Z axis, I am able to laser engrave using the 4th axis rotary on round items. Can't do that with the encoder driven by the 4th axis, unless you have a way to switch over to drive the rotary with the A, B or C axis and and unplug/disable Z and drive the laser with that axis. There are ways to do it, but it gets more complicated.

The servo drives the encoder from the 4th axis, but I can not use the rotary at the same time for the reason I mentioned above. However it does allow me to control the Z axis and laser independently to be able to paint shades on the 3D spindle relief engravings with the laser diode.

Maybe one day I will setup a machine with 5 axis control that will be able to do it all.   cool

Jeff

Thanks Doug,

You know, I have seen what you struggled with on your machine. The higher power and speeds needed to engrave, gave me some issues. I had to double the rated amps to the little nema 17 stepper on the Z axis to be able to increase the accels so it would not burn black splotches from hesitations. The higher accels also started to cause missed steps. The higher amps resolved theses issues, but caused the stepper to heat up to much, so I had to add a fan to it. I'm considering changing the small nema 17 to a nema 23, but for now it seems to be working like is should. Still more tuning to do and I may try 45 degree today.

****************************************************************************************************************

Did this one at 45 degrees, 75IPM, full power, .006" PR, gamma 1.2 and sharpen to 8.

Jeff was kind enough to send me the photo of "The Duke" above.  Burned today using same settings as noted by Jeff.  Acceleration on all axis set at 80 (may up to 85 for next burn and see if start loosing steps).  Was pleased as this is the best burn I've had so far.  Increasing the acceleration eliminated some of the problems I was having prior.  Included a photo of my machine with the 4th axis for the encoder.  Nema 23 steppers on X, Y, and A axis.  Only use the Z-axis, with nema 17 stepper, for adjusting Z zero height.  Added heat sinks and fan to the A-axis stepper and it now runs very cool.

WOW Doug.

Yours sure came out better then mine with even more detail. You can even see the checkered pattern in her dress, where it did not come out in my engraving.

I'm on a mission to catch up to you now.  biggrin

Doug,
OK, I give up.  It was bad enough just trying to keep up with Jeff, but now there's no way for me to keep up with the two of you.

Help, I'm being double-teamed.
biggrin

Congratulations,
John

Thanks for the kudo's, but one good burn does not a master make.  Just dumb luck and a lot Jeff's and John's guidance.  Not sure, but think increasing the acceleration, per Jeff's comments, helped out my results more than anything.  John's comments on what makes a photo good for a burn was also a great help.  At least I see a little light at the end of the tunnel and it's been a whole lot of fun along with the frustration.

---------------------------------------------
Friends,
I am pleased to be able to announce that Jeff Woodcock, the inventor
of analog laser diode image engraving, and his son, have agreed to
join with me to develop cost-effective engraving related software
for hobby engravers.  We will be working together on both new
programs we want to develop for Arduino GRBL users, as well as
furthering development of PicEngrave Pro for Mach3 and other cnc
control programs.

Jeff and his son will be slowly assuming full responsibility for
sales, distribution, and support, as well as testing and debugging
our 'Pic' line of software products.  Our first successful project
together has been the development of PicLaser Lite, a special
version of which will soon be shipping with production kits of the
highly successful Kickstarter project by Darkly Labs in Australia
(https://www.kickstarter.com/project....ngraver ).

I am excited to be associated with Jeff and his son.  Their able
assistance will afford me more quality time to devote to program
coding, which I enjoy.

Thank you,
John Champlain
