Jeff
I noticed you have the same vacuum system on your laser as you do on your spindle motor. I am getting ready to install a vacuum system on the whole shop and was wondering if you are satisfied with the system you are using and how many HP it is? I am just in the design mode and planning to get a vacuum pump soon. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jerry

You are not going to believe this, but my vacuum is a old school chalk board eraser cleaner I mounted outside.

One of these.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....:top:en

I butchered it and and removed the vacuum unit and it really sucks. laugh It's a heavy duty cast aluminum housing vacuum. I have a 115vac controller allows me to speed it up or down. The laser just needs a slight suction, where the spindle needs full suction.

The dust shoe is a Mr Gasket cast aluminum small block Chevy thermostat housing. It works great because the top shape of it deflects the air coming out of the spindle so it does not blow dust everywhere. The dust only gets sucked up from underneath it. A regular small vacuum hose attachment tapered extension if cut off just the right length, fits tight inside the hose barb on the side. The one on the spindle is the same one on the laser to block the beam and to suck out fumes. It mounts to the spindle/laser clamp and is adjustable for up and down height. I like something small so I can see the progress of the engravings.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff
That's cool! I thought I recognized that. That's almost like something I'd do. The Z on my laser is made from old bicycle parts and a tread mill,  that I should still be using. I might be able to get an old hole house vacuum system But I don't how well they suck till I can mess with it a bit. The shop vacs. I have now, It's easier to sweep than vacuum. I think I'll strive to get something that will pick up a bowling ball and take out the trash.
Thanks for the input and the link.
Jerry

I see where you lower the number on the end closest to 0.0000 (White) -0.010 to -0.012. This I assume makes the lighter Gray shades darker (I hope). Did I say that right ? I have been trying to control the shades with the speed IPM. I see where I must need a little of each. But right now I have it so messed up in my pea sized brain that I'm surprised I can get it to do anything. (Max 3rd Axis Depth -0.0252, Min. 3rd Axis Depth -0.012) Is that what you mean?

Just finished
Feed rate 30IPM +167% Mach3=50.1 IPM.( I think ), Max. 3rd Axis Depth -0.0252, Min. 3rd Axis Depth 0.0000, 45 Deg. It took over 24 hrs. to burn but it is big, 34 X 30 inches. I used 15/16 Poplar. My DAC is doing good but I need to watch how I Zero 0.0000, I had some marks I had to sand off. I'm sure I can speed it up more when I figure out how to get the lighter colors darker. My next project I will try what Jeff said and add some negative numbers to the Zero. Isn't PEP4 Great!!! Thank you John.

Jerry, you sure do have talent with your spindle/laser engravings.

With my encoder, if I keep stepping up, it will jump from 0V to 5V (5VJ). What I do is increment up (positive value) until it jumps to 5V, then back down .0001" at a time until it jumps back to 0V again, then I Zero the axis there. Then I set my incremental moves to .001" and step down (negative value) to my starting burning power point of the material then Zero it again. On the 3D spindle/laser engraving, Poplar ended up being -.0160" from the 5VJ with the feedrate I used.

I always use a .0000 min. and a -.0256" max in PEP on all materials. The encoder gives me so many different ways to set the laser diodes power and that is why I prefer using it.

What I document for reference later is, the material, steps per for encoder (power level), Pixel Resolution, negative value from the 5V jump to zero the axis, set feedrate and feedrate change percentage used. Now with laser engraving 3D reliefs, I need to note that process also because it will be different then just engraving 2D on the same type of material.

Jeff

This would probably have been a good winter to have one of these Fordson snow machines to just run over the top of the snowbound vehicles. laugh

It sure is a strange old vehicle. yes

This was a test on Birch Ply to see how much contrast I could achieve.

Another contrast test on Birch. I read on another forum commercial CO2 lasers have a hard time getting any contrast on Baltic Birch without allot of prep work before and after laser engraving. I'm sure glad I do not have to do that with my LD.

Cranked up the power this time to see how close I could get black to burn black, but still have the lighter shades not be too dark.

I used vertical angle, 210 IPM set feedrate, 7/10 Power (7000 steps per.), zero axis - .007" from 5VJ, + .006" safe for extended edge, .0000 "min & -.0256" max, .005 "PR and 40% FRC. Have to check my connections again. Another hiccup happened, there are two vertical lines running through the engraving.

Not up to Jeff's or John's work, however making some progress in tuning my laser engraver.  Here's two tests that I did today.  My engraver is based on Jeff's mini except that I'm using the 2 amp LD.  Both of these were done on birch ply at 70 ipm, 0.005" res, horizontal, 20% FRC.  Z was zeroed at 0.5 volt.  Girl 3 image was edited using sharping 5, gamma 1.2.  Thought it was darker than I wanted so changed settings on Girl 4 to sharpen 10, gamma 0.8.  It's a start.

Another attempt with a spindle/Laser engraving. I had to use my spindle eraser a few times until I got my laser set just right. tongue  This one was done with 3 different image files. First one was the original for the laser shading, the second I edited the original to a height map in Photo Paint. Not perfect, but was close enough to get depths. Third was a border image file.

My mini had been setting idle for awhile, so I decided to do something on it. 50IPM, 35% FRC, .007" PR, 45 Left on Birch Ply.

Darn, this one is almost good enough to enter a contest with.  rolleyes
