I finely got the DAC to do what it needs to do. Now I need to figure out how to do it. I have had this picture on before with the CO2 laser but this is with Johns and Daves DAC and the diode laser. The spot in the lower left corner I was to slow and had to speed it up. The halo around the rear of the cole car I had the zero not on zero for 3rd axis min. depth., 30 inches/min., 45 deg. and feed rate change 30%. I know it's not to beautyfull to you but after two monthes fighting with this it's beauty is a real blessing.
Thanks for looking
Jerry

Very nice Jerry,

I still don't understand why you are having to run your feedrates so slow. You should be able to lase at least a set feedrate of 60IPM on Poplar I would think, if that is Poplar.

Having been thoroughly cajoled by a good friend into getting off my backside and start engraving and posting images again, I did this leopard today.  Original size is 9 x 7 inches.  PicEngrave Pro 4 development version, engraved at a 45° angle - Baltic birch ply - 80 ipm - 40% feed rate change - 1.7 amps max. diode current - 0.007 inch pixel resolution.  If it looks familiar, that's because I did a smaller version of this with my older machine quite sometime ago.  Right at 3 hours.

Thanks guys.
I used a scanner, not a camera.  And not a typo Jerry.  You should be able to get close to that, too - certainly 60ipm.  That's what Jeff was saying.

John,

That leopard engraving you did inspired me to do this one today on white wash pickling stain. Bean baby was set @ 180IPM, 50%FRC, .004"PR, 3/4 power, -.006" from 5VJ, it was 7X7 and took 1h 53min.

180 IPM I think that's faster than the speed of light. How can the laser keep up? I see where I am going to try to speed up things. I thought my mom through that picture of me away, how did you get it?

John,

seriously, it really did not come out very good. I must not have got the stain on evenly because it caused splotches in areas as you can see.

Jerry, that's slow for my machine. That white stain on wood makes it harder to burn.

Jeff, when I look at an engraving, I try to ignore the medium used and look at the shade reproduction, and it is very good on your last work.  The contrast between the whites of the eyes, the eyebrows, and the skin is very good and true to a black and white film photo.   I have not been so lucky using the white wash stain; perhaps due to my sloppy application technique.

We tried a different strategy this time. Instead of using an original image and a height map that was generated from it, we used a height map image to spindle engrave, then edited the height map image to laser the shades. Of course using a computer generated height map will not have as much detail as using a real photo, but it is so much easier to be able to use this combined CNC technology process this way.

We used Red Oak and my son was able to add the FRC with his program for the combined file this time. The settings in PEP for the spindle file was .005" PR with a full depth of .125". The laser file was the same PR, but a set Feedrate of 125IPM, full depth of -.0256" and a FRC of 40%. The power was at 2/5 and starting zero was -.010" from the 5VJ.

Here is the height map image we used.

And here is the same height map after editing for lasering the shades.

Here is how it turned out.

We are spindle engraving the same height map now in Poplar with some slightly different editing and settings and will post the results when it's finished.

That's GREAT! Keep me in the loop on how harm comes out with Poplar?
Jeff or John or someone smarter than me.
I am Trying to speed things up and I am using Mach3 feed rate override. If I am doing this right, I used feed rate at 35 IPM in PEP and if I turn up the feed rate override in Mach3 to 143%. Would you hurt the same as if I set PEP to 50 IPM?
working I have a big one and do not want to get to brave yet it's also good at doing Jerry Those rates. Thanks feed

Thanks Jerry,

That  is how I test by the feedrate override, then calculate what the feedrate should be on the next one without the override.

Poplar is a little harder to burn then Oak is. This one came out good, but I need to bring the lower power Zero place up a little. This one was set at -.010" from the 5VJ, so maybe -.012" or -.014". By doing this using the same -.0256" in PEP as a depth, it will bring the higher burning power up also and darken it overall.

I lightened the laser image slightly using Gamma this time also.

Here is the Precise 45,000 RPM grinding spindle I use also. It's a workhorse and with that kind of RPM's, I can spindle engrave fairly fast with the 1/32" Ball End Mills.

Jeff
