John
I was wondering about something, correct me if I am off base on this.
I notice on the diode laser with the intensity of the burn, Analog varies the depth of the gray shade (volts) and CO2 TTL with the intensity of the burn is always the same. The gray shades change Dither When spreads out the pixels, in the TTL. This action, with Analog, on the lighter shades of gray, in the wood grain, does not burn the same as TTL. The darker shades are not as much Affected by the wood grain, with Poplar Wood. If my Assumption is correct, Would a different type of lumber be more suited to the diode laser with analog?

Hope That makes sense.
Thanks Jerry

Jerry,

maybe I can answer your question. Look at post #127 in this thread. Dave gives two examples using analog on Poplar with his DAC and with the MA3.

http://hobbycncart.com/forum/63-151-7

You will need to figure out the settings that works best for different types of materials and that includes feedrate, starting zero power level (.0000"), full power level (-.0255"), feedrate change percentage, ect. Some materials burn easier then others, but you can get the diode to engrave good on Poplar using analog. I use Birch ply allot because I have a stack of it and it does burn fairly easy and I can run fast with it.

Jerry,
Your observation makes a lot of sense.  Not all wood types have the same burning characteristics.  I have some plywood of unknown wood that burns very dark, even with relative low laser power.  It is very unsuitable for images.  Baltic Birch seems to be the best I have found for burning images.  I have not tried Poplar.

The DAC did this on Poplar. I just thought you Would like to see. I thank you two for all the help. Now I need to see if my CO2 laser will work with the other Bob. thanks again. Now to try some art. show you soon.

Jerry,
You are getting it tuned very close now.  Try another with the exact same settings, except use 45° Left Angle instead of Horizontal.

The DAC  is at it again?? It will run the test strip good but when I tried it on this program (super simple black and white) it runs a couple of minutes and forgets what it is suppose to do. 45 and 90 deg. fast and slow. I'm telling you it just doesn't like me. The good ones I did with the Encoder. I think it is unstable when I'm not looking. Jerry

Jerry,
Have you been able to test the DAC yet with it bypassing your BOB?  I do not believe it will work correctly with your BOB, but testing is needed.  Also, can you send me the gcode file that messed up in the images above?

This is my LD test photo. When I can start to see the water dripping from you know where and able to see her you know what through her T shirt, I know I'm getting close with the alignment/focusing of the lenses and the settings in PEP. Getting real close.  biggrin

Finally worked out the major bugs with my build.  At least I can make a little smoke.  My design is a modification of Jeff's mini laser using
the encoder.  Attached is a photos of 'rough' first burn of the
greyscale image and a couple shots of the unit.  Now to fine tune.
enjoy the forum and both Jeff and John have been a great help.  Thanks.

Doug

hands hands hands Big applause for you Doug. Do you need a test photo to get things fine tuned? laugh

Just kidding! Very happy to finally see success with your build. Looks very professional. respect

Hey, Doug, congratulations.
Turn up your sound - I'm clapping, too. biggrin

Seriously, very nicely done, especially your machine setup.  Very professional looking installation.   Time now to do some real images.

Wow, Jeff.  Why, that's almost as good as a commercial CO2 laser can do. biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin

John,

I wonder if I pump CO2 gas into the laser diodes beam, it will come out as good as a commercial CO2 laser.  facepalm

Back to the drawing board.  rolleyes

Thank you everyone!!

This one is the other Lotus Esprit I owned at that same car show. It was a white 1989 Turbo. The other one was a red 1991 Turbo with an intercooler.
