I needed a new blade holder for a tangential knife which would enable relatively quick and easy blade change and positional setup. With just a couple of hours to spare, whilst another CNC job was running, this was the result.

tweakie, nice work again! That's why so good if You have machines to create a useful part from a piece of metal. What do You plan to cut with this tool? Will it be a vinyl cutter?

Hi Amator,
There is a gasket material which I am unable to laser cut so thought this may do the job. It will need a little help and although I have never used ultrasonics before, how hard can it be ??
This is the Sonotrode it will be mounted to.

Thanks Richy.
The Sonotrode dimensions have been calculated on the assumption that sound will travel through this particular grade of aluminium at 5100m/sec. If that is not the case then it is back to the drawing board.

As it’s all part of the same project I thought perhaps these pics of the bearing housing may be of interest.
Stage 1 was to centre drill the 6 holes and (1mm undersize) profile the bore on the mill. Stage 2 was turning the OD on a lathe. Stage 3 was manually drilling and tapping the 6 holes and finishing the bore to a bearing fit.

tweakie, nice work again! The closest ultrasonic thing to me is a little cleaner, I don't know too much about them. This sonotrode is new for me, I was looking for infos on the net, but I cannot see exactly how they work. What I could figure out that the shape of this part is very important to send the energy to the work area. You still need an ultrasonic generator plus a head to create the waves don't You? How will this cut through the material with a micron size stroke? Very interesting project, I'm curious for continuation!

Hi Amator,
I am 'learning as I go' and fortunately have plenty of time before the project needs to be completed so plenty of margin for 'trial and error'
Initial testing will be with a 2 element transducer (like they fit to the cleaning baths) but a 4 element device will be used with the finished design. With luck, I will have some spare time next week to make some more parts

Hi Amator,
It has been a while but the project was put on hold soon after it was started.
The good news is that the company producing the dies for cutting the gaskets did a re-think on it's pricing for the design change modifications.
The bad news is that Mach3 has a problem with it's Tangential Control tool-path generation. Once this is fixed it is likely that the project will be back on again.
