Muk (Rob?),
Glad you're here.

You have the setting wrong.  I have sent you a PM with recommended settings.  The Min and Max 3rd axis depths must not be the same.  You have both set to -0.01. smile

Hi Muk,

Welcome to the forum.
As everybody here uses GCode there is a better pool of knowledge which, I am sure, will help to get you up and running in no time. smile

Hi Muk
Glad your here too.
I'll be keeping an eye on what your doing because someday I'll get my laser going and I am not knowing a thing about what to do to make it work. So thanks for joining
Jerry

Thanks for the welcome guys =D

And for sure I will post stuff I've been doing lately...I also built my laser cutter from (almost) scratch. So I can help with any of the stuff related to those growing pains...

Now that I don't have a water mark on my etchings, I'll start working on some nicer stuff laugh

Rob,
Looking forward to seeing your work.  I, for one, would also like to see pictures of your machine build if you would please care to post some.  I need to finish my present diode build (still having a problem with the diodes weep ), but I'm getting a tiny little CO2 itch that I might just need to scratch  yes now that there's a bunch of y'all here.

I'll work on getting some pictures together for you guys.

Be warned, it's an ugly looking creature...but it works very very well. Aesthetics were not on my to-do list when I was getting started. That and working with 1" thick material at times made for my meager tool selection difficult to keep things pretty *laughs*

Function over beauty is my motto.

Not yet, but we are still looking for one of our cats. Hope I didn't vaporise him. biggrin I'm glad there's an interlock switch on the lid of this beast. Helps me to avoid the gravitational attraction that rotating bits seem to have for my finger tips. Even the unfocused beam is enough to burn wood. It's like a desktop version of star wars.

John
Here is the picture we did to dark all I did to lighten it up was run the orbital over it. It might of got even lighter but I was afraid of loosing teeth and noses. It is a wedding gift so don't tell them yet. I did try to do one with lighter stain but the Z wasn't deep enough and so I had to scrap it. By the way it took 3 hrs. to make the cut. Thanks again for all your help PEP4 is great. I can't wait untill my laser comes.
Thanks
Jerry

Jerry,
That is great.  I'm sure they will be very happily surprised with such a unique gift.  It is sure to become a family heirloom.

Two more pics. Some vector engraving, including the cutout toolpath on 2" x 1.25" x 1/4" luan ply. And another raster image on black painted aluminum sheet, 5" x 7" at 500 lines per inch, followed by some scrubbing with a toothbrush, soap and water. I like this new toy! I even put the toothbrush back in the rack. biggrin

Looks like you've got it tuned it in pretty good now.

So Dave, was that just using 2-bit Dithering for that picture? What was the original image size and your dot size?

Thanks guys! The kitten/puppy image was cropped to 5x7",  resampled to 250 dpi in coreldraw, and printed to an .XPS file. That then gets fed into the retinaengrave software that comes with the FSE laser. It can import xps files or bitmaps, or you can print to it as if it were a printer driver. It up-samples the image to 1000dpi, and allows me to halftone dither the image as either 1000dpi, 500dpi or 250dpi. For this one, I used 500dpi, and it took about 25 minutes or so for the 2500 raster lines at 100% speed (17.9 inches/second) and 60% power.
The same retinaengrave software will also separate out any vectors based on the width and color of the vector lines. So I can raster, or vector or raster then vector.
For the text, I did the text layout in vcarve pro (i like their single line script font), and saved it as an .AI file, imported that into coreldraw, sized it and put the vector around it for the cutout path, printed it as an xps file, and ran it as a vector only operation in retineengrave. It can control the order of  up to 7 different vector operations, so I did the text first at 100% speed 30% power, then the cutout at 30% speed 100% power.
The software is very flexible, and does a good job.
I'm finding that wood is hard to get really good detail in, the laser pretty much vaporises it at the higher power settings. Mirror tiles, black granite tiles, and paint on aluminum seem to produce much better detail and contrast.
Overall, I'm really pleased with how well this thing is working. It's exceeded my expectations.
I guess the hardest thing for me is getting used to the idea that this thing doesn't use gcode and mach3, it acts like a network attached printer.

Dave

Hmmm, k I'll try to see about working that into 'old fashion' g-code setup wink

I was wondering if anyone in here has or could make a Post Processor for CamBam/Mach 3 using M10/M11 codes. I'm not entirely sure how that would get swapped out for my Z 0.01 and Z -0.01 codes. I looked over the post process info but my eyes crossed cry
