Not having any anodized aluminum on hand, I decided to try some black high-temp stove paint as a coating. Didn't come out as good as I wanted though. I've almost reached the bottom of my scrap bin, time for another road-trip to get some more materials to play with.

biggrin Thanks tweakie! The rattle can I found in the junk box was flat black. Need to reverse the photo's dark/light, and lots of washing the soot off afterwards with soap and water and an old tooth brush.

Dave,
Looks to me like you're dialed in pretty darn good now.

Perhaps you might try different colors for effect.

I finally convenced the laser tube company in China my tube has a factory defect. They asked me to send it back and they will replace it. They told me they would only except it mailed  Air Mail EMS. I went to the P.O. and they told me the fee is $80.00. I told them never mind. I am not sure how many times I would have to do this, at $80.00, to get a good tube. MY mistake. Does anyone know someone in the U.S.A. that speeks English, sells laser tubes and will say it will work? I don't care if they came from China, I just want one that works.
Can anyone HELP!!?
Thank You Jerry

Thanks John! The up side to this thing is that jobs finish quick enough that I might actually live long enough to see them complete. The down side is that it's so much quicker I've used up most of the material I had on hand. I wanted to try another mirror tile today, but other things like lawn mowing got in the way wink

Jerry,
http://fslaser.com/replacement-tube-40w looks like they sell replacement tubes, not sure if they sell them for other than their own machines though. Other than being a happy customer, I've no connection to them.

Jerry,

Perhaps contact Ray Scott at Rabbit Laser USA.
He is usually out on the road making machine deliveries so not easy to get hold of but he is a darn nice guy and should be able to steer you in the right direction.

Jerry,
What Tweakie said.  You make my efforts look extremely amateurish, which they are. smile

Hi Dave,

Just something for thought regarding mirrors…

By using the accidental discovery mentioned here http://hobbycncart.com/forum/63-158-11263-16-1357381108 it may be possible to obtain reasonable results engraving to black rather than engraving to white.

Early days yet but this does enable different viewing possibilities.
Obviously much more experimentation is required before my results are anywhere near acceptable but I have just thrown in the idea for possible consideration.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I wonder if the glaze stuff they use to paint on ceramics before baking in the kiln would work too. If it does, that would give us some more choices of colors. So many things to try, so little time..... biggrin

I did notice something the other day that I haven't had much time to pursue. The luan plywood they sell these days looks dark reddish brown like mahogany, but under that thin veneer layer it's much whiter. The laser burned through the thin veneer layer exposing the lighter center of the plywood.

Dave,

I have been wondering about enamelling powders - one day I will give it a try.

This was the second attempt, turned out a bit too dark but the trouble with mirrors is you only get to see the result once it has been finished (also forgot to flip the image).

Some more black paint on aluminum. Rattle can's almost empty biggrin
I like the paint method. When I screw it up (as in most of the time), I just paint over it and try again.

Dave,
Neat.  I haven't tried paint on aluminum.  Don't know why, I have done it for pc boards.

At John's request I've jumped in wink

So here I am trying to get a handle on PEP. So far it's amazing, but I can't get it to output anything for my laser. Maybe you guys might lend me a hand here...my 'on' depth is z-0.01 and 'off' depth is z0.01 much like I use in CamBam for my other work. For the life of me, I can't get PEP to generate my g-code where it actually separates the white and black. It's just a giant solid black box or a block of an object. I must be getting settings wrong here or something. Definitely something is up :P Anything that would help this along would be greatly appreciated...
