Jerry,

If it’s any help the attached diagram depicts the extent of the tube’s water jacket.

When fitting a new tube it pays to mount it with the water outlet at the top as this helps with expelling all the air from the water jacket (the pump may need to initially be run for anything up to 24 hours to get rid of all the air bubbles before the tube is fired up). smile

Thanks for the drawing and explanation. I think I needed this because I am in to much of a hurry (I want to see it go!). The water flow direction in your drawing is opposite to what I have. There is a constant flow of small bubbles going into the water line from inside the tube while while the pump is running (see attachment). I'll Turn it around and give it 25 hrs. I still don't have it figured out how to put that picture up here?
Thanks
Jerry

Jerry,

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THAT TUBE !

Your tube is damaged beyond repair and needs to be replaced.

There should not be any coolant in the large diameter glass part.

Hi gang, here are some pictures of my testing on granite, mirror tile, and wood.
Time to engrave was close to 10 minutes for each image, they're 5.75" wide.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Great work, looks good. ok

(If you haven't already tried it, black or coloured anodized aluminium is nice to work with).

Great Dave,
Now I'm going to have to figure out how to simulate granite. dry

Would also like to see a pic or two  of your new machine.

Thanks Tweakie, John,
Pics of the setup. Laser's on a cart with wheels, cooling bucket of water underneath, exhaust fan made from clothes dryer parts and air assist pump in the back. Old cnc router/laser's in the background. It's going back to being just a router if I can tear myself away from the laser biggrin

An engraving of a friend of mine pushing buttons on an old ibm 1401 computer. Big for its day in the '60's, it could support up to 16k ram. Took under 10 minutes including the cutout. I really like this laser toy! biggrin

Nice work Dave. cool

Just out of interest, will your new laser software allow 'shades of grey' or is it just limited to half-tone ?

Hi Tweakie,
It looks like it's just on or off, but it does let me set the maximum power and speed in percentages from 0 to 100. It's got some sort of processor internally that has 32meg of buffer space and turns the laser on or off while driving the stepper motors. It's connected as a network attached printer with proprietary software that looks like a printer driver. The software allows a couple of dithering options - simple or halftone. It also does both raster and vector cutting, apparently deciding which item is a vector by the width of the item. And it is fast, though I haven't been able to find the speed in inches per minute listed anywhere. It's lightyears faster than my cnc with the laser diode. Overall, so far, I am very happy with it.
It allows rastering at 250, 500, or 1000 dots per inch, I've been using 250 for playtime as it's quicker. I have to do some more experimenting with the dpi choices.
I'd given some thought to building one from scratch as you did, or converting my existing cnc to do both routering and lasering, but decided to buy a ready made unit instead.
Dave

Their software manual claims it can engrave in 3D, looks like it does it by 'slicing' the image into a number of layers based on brightness, and then rastering each of the layers burning away the darker areas by repetition. Sounds like it's not fast though.
Tried some vector cutting today on 1/4" plywood. Cross is a scrollsaw pattern, 8" tall and took about 5 minutes. I doubt I could do as well on the scrollsaw by hand. The laser's kerf  is so narrow I bet it would be good a doing inlays.

Thanks guys! I really like this thing, just wish I'd gone for it sooner. But I did manage to convert the old cnc to ballscrews while I was trying to improve the accuracy and speed.
Hope I don't end up vaporizing the cats. biggrin

When and what are you going to laser on the hood of your car with that thing?  biggrin

Perched owl on artist canvas, rastered at 500 lines/inch 85% speed, 80% power, about 23 minuted to do the 5"x7" image. I did manage to find where they display the speed, looks like full speed is 17.89 inches/second.
