Halftone Techniques.

 Hi Guys,

In my distant past I was related to Mr Scrooge and believe that you can never have too much free software.
These two free programs ‘Halftoner’ and ‘Reactor’ were written by Jason Dorie (a Mach3 user). They are just so incredibly simple to use and yet produce some most unusual results. With the output in .jpg format from Reactor this can be converted to either a GCode toolpath or dot drill with VcarvePro, Artcam or similar whilst Halftoner will output a Mach3 compatable GCode or a .dxf as you chose.

This styled engraving of, the now departed, Amy I made with Reactor as an outline toolpath but equally could have been done as a V groove. When I get a little spare machine time I will make a line engraving using Halftoner and post the results.

This is the same image as produced with the 'lines' setting in Halftoner.

Yes, I agree, the software can produce some lovely artistic results but because the work is best viewed at a distance it would be nice to have a large (whole sheet sized) wood router. biggrin

I tried couples of months ago. "jasondorie" page has a lot of compressed files( like halftoners) with an exe( what doesn't want to run)

What was wrong?

I thought first, those are scams.

I have tried the DXF Halftone software and it is very good but I have found the Halftoner software to be easier to use. There is, however, a minor problem with the GCode generated from Halftoner when using the line function and working in metric units - it inserts an unwanted G70 into the code. I have contacted Jason Dorie and he only uses imperial units so has not seen the problem but he has agreed to look into resolving the G21 / G70 conflict.
When using the line function I don't really like the -Z in areas that are not to be engraved but as a 'work-around' I have been setting my Z zero at +0.03mm from the work surface which seems to solve the problem. Jason Dorie also said that he is considering a 'user- configurable' header file so perhaps this will resolve my issues in a revised version.

If the halftoner has a" little bug",I do not test it now.
You are right
the configurability makes the program usable.
I don't use often anyway but I like the / "simple and efficient"/ applications like" DotG or the vertic's programmes"

If Janson promised, and the improved version is comming soon I have to wait because I'm a not-programmer user.

By way of an update, I received an email from Jason Dorie saying that he has made corrections to his program Halftoner and these are reflected in the latest version available from his website Halftoner
