Very nice engraving Dave. It looks like you have your process down and the detail is really coming out now. Could you have run that at 100%/60IPM? Just curious.

The picture editing tools John added really helps considerably too, don't you agree?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I'm thinking I could have done 60ipm at 100%. Haven't tried that on birch or poplar though, so I'm just guessing. I just ran a test at 60ipm at 40% on luan, came out sort of ok but the strong grain wrecks the final product. On poplar, the images almost look 3D-ish. Still looking for wood that burns easily (reddish or tannish tint) but without the grain of the luan I have. Another road-trip is in order wink

And yes, I really like the stuff John's added!
Dave

Thanks guys.

I did a test yesterday that compared the Mouse Pad image I engraved and posted on the Vectric forum. John's program definitely gives allot more detail then PVC. I did some tweaking with my depths and went to -.0038" from where my encoder jumped to 5V and zeroed Z there and set the total depth at Z-.0255" and used .0035" retract. This put me .0003" to a darker shade at the low end and .0002" darker shade at the high end. It was .0002" movement at the high end from jumping back to 0V with the encoder. I ran it at 50IPM and the overall image came out darker. I believe at this setting I can squeeze another 5IPM and run at 55IPM. I will try that later today. I also purchased some Poplar to try out.

Jeff

Forgot to mention that I set gamma at 2 and sharpen at 5.

This picture I never could get it to come out right with PVC, but only took 1 try with PicEngrave Pro Laser Edition. I ran this one at 55IPM and probably could have at 60IMP. Now If I could just get a picture of the Mouse Pad girl riding this Harley. I'm not talking hands free either. smok

Looks good Jeff!
How large are the images that you burned? I'm having some difficulty with smaller sizes (5x7") getting all the detail that's in the image. Might be due to mach's cv stuff smoothing out the tool path.

Hi Dave,

The two babe pictures are 7.75" X 9.75" and the Harley is 7.75" X 5.25". I tried the Poplar and did not have very good results at all with it. It just does not burn as easy as the Birch ply. It may do better if I had more power like your laser, or did you figure out a trick on engraving with it?

Jeff

Just a thought Dave...

Are you getting your focus to a really tight dot ??

Anyone up for a wet T-shirt contest of laser engraving? The best way I have found to focus the lens to get the smallest dot is to use a piece of black anodized aluminum. Throttle it up some first. The idle glow is hard to tell.

Jeff

Hi Tweakie,
Yes, I may have been a bit off on the focus. Did some testing yesterday by burning a line on a inclined piece of wood, noting where the line is narrowest and using that point to establish the distance from the laser to the target. Prior to that I had been using blowing some smoke in the beam to see where the focal point is. There wasn't much difference between the two. It might be that some of the pictures I've tried just aren't very good for this, or maybe it's mach's CV stuff. I have more game playing to do I think.

Dave
