Hi Zoli,

Perhaps you could move your lens stack to the inside of the box section and then see if the situation improves.

oops, now I've done it....... Got really tired of multi-hour run times, so I broke down and ordered a 45 watt co2 machine..... now to start hunting down the rest of the things it needs and figure out where I'm going to put it....  biggrin Will probably have lots of questions for you tweakie!

Looks like it will take 2-4 weeks to arrive, also it has it's own drivers instead of mach3. Another learning curve by the sounds of it.
I had given some thought to adapting my existing cnc to carry the laser, but it was getting too complicated to have both the laser and router capabilities.

Hi Dave,

Looks like you will be in for a whole new world of discovery. thumb

The commercial laser machines use a modified version of HPGL via a printer driver (same system as the legacy Pen Plotters).
There are advantages and disadvantages to this system but I think you will be impressed by the increased laser power and it's cutting abilities.

I look forward to hearing of your adventure.

Tweakie.

Darn Dave,

moving up to the big league now creating millions of dots? I hope this is not the one you purchased. http://fslaser.com/products/lasers/newhobby

If so, I was considering buying one too because of there printing driver software, but I have been reading some horror stories about that brand and decided not to.

Dave,

are you going to try to modify it to laser 8bit shades? Of coarse after the warranty expires.  biggrin

Did a test today to see how small of text I could laser engrave and they still can be read. The smallest text on this calender is .032" tall on this 7.38"X 9.66" total size laser engraving and they are clearly legible. I would say the new 3 element glass lenses are working like they should.

Looks good Jeff! Smallest I had done is about a millemeter tall, in the same ballpark as yours. No, I probably won't try to modify the co2 laser - I don't see any technical details about their control card so not many clues about how to do it. I think I'll just sit back and be a stereotypical dumb user. wacko

Hi Jeff

Very good.

I do not have a sense of achievement, which is why I have not written.
Already a burned natural wood on the laser.
But there is no shade, just black or white.
I tried many times but no good result.

Thanks Zoli,

Have you tried just pulsing your laser using TTL? I get pretty good results also by dithering the image black & white with John's editing tools and then generate the gcode. If I remember correctly, you do not have any way to vary the power of your laser other then using variable feet rate. Pulsing may give you better results. I also have good results just using Birch Plywood because it burns easy.

Have you resolved your focusing problem yet? That may be the reason also if your focused diameter is to big. I have mine focused down around a .2mm diameter.

Jeff

I revisited an older process I used before using Minwax white wash pickling stain on some Birch Ply. The image was not a photo, but a computer generated picture which made the shades not as defined.

Jeff,
Nicely done.  How many coats of white wash do you use to hide the wood grain?

Thanks John.

I only used a light coat of stain. The more you put on, the harder is to burn and the fumes get more intense.  With this light coat I set the pixel resolution to .006" and ran it at 40IPM.
