Hi all, new member.  Directed here by Picengraver and Tweakie.  I'm looking to get into some simple line engraving on my small gantry machine.  Fun times ahead!  cool

Hi Nick,
Glad you're here.  I just left a message for you on the Mach forum.

Late here now (for me anyway).  We can pick up again tomorrow.

Guys, Nick is interested in starting out with more simple line engraving, but if we push a little, maybe he'll soon be doing images, too smile

John

Welcome Nick. Glad to see some new interest here.

John, I think we all started out doing line engravings. Waite a minute, we are still doing line engravings, they are just getting allot closer together for the shaded images to magically appear.  biggrin

Guys,
Did this one this morning on canvas with variable feed rate - same settings as previous.  Still a little too dark, but I think it would lighten up if I can coax a higher feed rate out of my machine.

Thank you, Friends,

My compliments to csewe (Zoli) for discovering the variable feed rate method.  It does require a fast machine for best quality, but what speed that will be for each material is yet to be determined.

Yea, thanks Zoli for your idea on another way to laser engrave shades.  thumb

Thank you.
G-ray program is faulty.
As long as it does not improve, they do not use.
I try to fix it soon.

Thank you, Nick.  Please feel free to ask anyone here whatever questions come up as you setup your system.  The combined expertise of the members here is unmatched.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did this image this morning on a mirror using Zoli's variable feed rate method (which incidentally Nick, is done using TTL laser control - not analog).

The image is slightly distorted since I photographed it at an angle to avoid distracting reflections.

The cause of the horizontal lines is still a puzzle to me.  They seem repeat in groups of 6, which does not correspond to my lead screw pitch (20), so I am beginning to suspect they may be caused by a gcode (or Mach3?) axis value rounding error that appears magnified by the extremely fine resolution of the focused laser beam.  Suggestions/comments about this phenomenon appreciated.

John

John, I think you raster horizontally rather than vertically? Are the lines parallel to the x axis (it's hard to tell since the image is at an angle)? If it doesn't match the lead screw pitch, perhaps it's got something to do with the y carriage bearings? I usually remove the stepper motor and move the carriage or leadscrew by hand when I try to find a bind or other irregularity. Since the focus spot of the laser is so tiny, it doesn't take very much to cause problems.
Dave

Thank Dave,
Yes, the lines are parallel to X axis.  The bearings are Oilite bronze bushings on the Y axis (linear ball on X and Z), and I didn't think they could/would cause a repeating irregularity as I'm getting, but I certainly will check them.  I will also do a vertical engraving to see what happens.

I find that there's a tiny tiny amount of backlash on my y axis ballscrew that results in some random dark lines that don't match the pitch of anything. I had a constant force spring that I usually use on the z carriage to negate the extra weight when I'm using a router. At 7 pounds, it's probably overkill, but if I use it on the y-axis it takes up the backlash and fixes the random lines.

Thanks again, Dave,
That's interesting.  I hadn't considered a minute backlash possibility since I have a reasonably new ab nut on the Y axis, but that could be it.

I rotated the same file 90° so the image would engrave with the Y axis instead of the X, and the lines were evenly spaced.  Checked again with the file rotated back to normal after cleaning and lubing the Y rails, but the lines/bands are back.

I'll try a new lead screw next.

You might try taking up the backlash with an extension spring or a bungee cord just to see if that has an effect. Or perhaps disconnect the lead screw from the carriage just to verify it moves very freely by hand without racking.

Tipping of the z-axis carriage on the Y rails or springiness in the laser mounting can also do this.

Dave,
Running some tests this morning.  I am now suspecting that microstepping inaccuracy is my problem.  I was using 1/4 microsteps, now trying 1/2.  Can't do full step with my controller (HobbyCNC), but may also try 1/8 and 1/16 if 1/2 doesn't improve things.

My steppers are old, round-can, Sanyo-Decki (sp?) models.  May be time to replace them.

I'm pretty sure from my crude testing that it is not a machine mechanical issue.  It moves freely and is tight.

Thanks,
John
