I'm starting to get my LD machine finally tuned in. Now I need to replenish my wood supply. These two were burned into cheap grade plywood - maple surface I think. They are too dark, but I'm pleased with the detail. My LD is set for .275 amps minimum and 1.2 amps maximum. More seems better, so I will try to up it to 1.4 amps max tomorrow to see if image contrast will improve.

Happy New Year All,
John Champlain

Thanks Jeff,
I have the DAC set so it outputs about .9 V at C0.0 and 5.0 V at C-0.0255". This gives me the full 256 bits of resolution to the analog controller and allows me to set C0 where the wood just starts to burn at feed rate. I can then adjust the controller to a min and max diode current. I'm still fine tuning this step. Previously I had been trying to reduce the max diode current to match the wood's burning characteristics. While in theory this sounded right, it seems to give less contrast to images.

I have also done some work on my machine and have it now burning at about 45 IPM. This has helped also, as it not only reduces image run time, it also seems to help even out the burn.

John

Looks good John and Jeff! Hope to have mine working again soon. Got most of the problem out of the Y axis and have parts on the way to fix the X axis.

Jeff,
Great video.

I know that is not true. My video skills are not the greatest as you can see by the shaking. It has not gone public yet except the link here and I plan on doing some editing today to clean it up.

John,

Did Santa bring you some new CNC equipment? You have exceeded my capabilities with that one as it looks so realistic. respect Please give us some details of your settings and what kind of material or wood you engraved that on.

Jeff,
Quoting George Washington, "Father, I can not tell a lie; ..." The leopard image had a little help from my PaperPort scanning software, and from contrast with the forum's black background smile . Below is the actual image as scanned.

Image size is 6 x 4 inches. I used a resolution of .008 inch. LD current: max 1.4 amps - min .35 amps, with full 256 bit resolution. Wood is a piece of especially clear grained, cheap plywood from Lowe's - supposed to be birch, but who knows? It doesn't burn as easy as baltic birch, so I had to slow feed rate down from 45 ipm to 30 ipm. Took about 1.5 hours.

John

Tweakie, Beni, Dave, and Jeff,

Thank you. My wife caught me searching for a pinup to compete with Jeff, and guietly suggested I would do better with animals. Perhaps she was right smile

I'm not sure how far I can safely push my laser diode, but I would like to see if I can get a little more contrast without slowing down the feed rate. If I blow the LD, which I don't really want to do, at least it will give me an excuse to try one of the newer, more powerful, 445's.

John
