Hi Viktor,
The construction of my home-made vinyl cutter is described here and I have included some larger pictures below.
This was made a few years back when they were extremely expensive to buy but since then Roland copies have become available on ebay at such low prices, I would think it is hardly worth making one any more.
Still it was fun to make and it works extremely well and I use it often.
As we all know the secret to success is sharp tools so the sharpener is an important part of the project and it only takes seconds, with a diamond ‘stone’ to sharpen the knife.

If there is anybody who has not already tried vinyl cutting, it is an incredibly simple and easy process.
Once the design has been drawn and finalised a vector toolpath of the work is created to drive the cutter.
Once the cutting is complete the ‘weeding’ task begins. All the unwanted parts of the design are carefully removed and discarded.
Then a low tac ‘application tape’ is applied over the top of the work. The application tape, complete with the work, is then peeled away from the backing paper – positioned in the correct place and pressed home with a ‘squeeze’ or similar. Finaly the application tape is carefully peeled away leaving the vinyl in place. The non-stick backing paper is often used to press the vinyl fully home and check no parts were lifted when the application tape was removed.
There are so many stickers on my machines now, I am running out of places to put more.
Once my neighbours found out I did vinyl cutting I had to make them all house numbers to put on their ‘wheelie bins’ (rubbish bins).

I have been extremely busy with work lately (earning money while I can) and not had much spare time to post anything to the forum.
This vinyl sticker of Che was done in a spare moment of free machine time. I have also included my .dxf file if anyone else wants to cut this image.

Thanks guys.
I think the interesting thing about Che Guevara is that he was loved in South America, hated in North America and to this day there is still divided opinion. Either way this is an all time iconic image.

Nice work Amator, they look really good.
For others that follow...
Please be aware that special precautions are needed when cutting vinyl (PVC) with a laser. The burning process releases copious amounts of Chlorine gas which will combine with the natural moisture in the atmosphere to produce a compound of Hydrochloric acid. This is not only extremely toxic and extremely dangerous to breathe it will also cause severe corrosion of your machine. Suitable fume extraction is always necessary when working with lasers and many plastics but for personal safety reasons PVC is best avoided.

tweakie, thanks for info! A while ago I had a chinese plotter with Roland copy equipment and I think it made a good job.
